The Review: I was contacted and then sent a sample kit from Christine at NouVara several weeks ago. My kit contained VitaWash Purifying Cleanser, Xfoliate Polishing Scrub, Platinum 02 PM Restructure Serum, Intense SIX AM Tightening Serum, MatrixPT Age Reversal Moisturizer and Crystal Eyes Renewing Eye Gel.
The stand-out product in this kit (for me at least) is the Crystal Eyes Renewing Eye Gel. I really loved this stuff and I did receive comments from 2 different people telling me that I looked “refreshed” and that my eyes looked “brighter”. If you read the ingredients you will understand why this works quite well as an eye cream. It contains several reflective ingredients, which minimize the appearance of lines, anti-inflammatory agents, which help with bags under the eyes and an ingredient to minimize dark circles.
All of the products contained no detectable or very little scent. If there was any scent at all it was a clean smell, which was pleasant. The consistency of the products reminded me of egg whites, especially the eye gel, (which by the way can be applied to the skin for a quick tightening mask) but not in a bad way. They did leave a slightly “tacky” feel behind, but this was not unpleasant in any way. I found that a little bit goes a looooong way with these products and that of course is always a bonus.
The face wash left my face feeling soft and moisturized, but not greasy at all and the moisturizer lasted a long time. I woke up in the morning with a face that still felt plump and moist. Also, the Xfoliate Polishing Scrub is very mild and did a nice job, without drying my skin. One thing to note is that my mineral makeup looked flawless when applied over the moisturizer.
The serums were a bit harder to review, because most of the SIX AM Tightening serum leaked out of the case and I find that generally speaking serums take a bit of use until you really notice any effect.
I definitely love the fact that the products do not contain parabens, sulfates, harsh preservatives and overall yucky stuff for your skin. I also like the fact that their web site does not contain cheesy tag lines such as “botox in a bottle” or “look 10 years younger”.
Overall I would say that eye gel was the most “scientifically” effective product and my favorite. The other products were nice and my skin did look moist and plump after using them.
Price: $555.00 for the full-size kit or less if you sign up for auto-shipment. I will add the disclaimer that I am not a fan of auto-shipping, but at least it’s an option and not a requirement, with NouVara.

Review: Med Peel Glycolic 50% Medium Strength Peel Kit – Thumbs Up
Ingredients: Deionized Water (purified water), Glycolic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide (controls pH), Xanthan Gum (thickening agent), Phenoxyethanol (preservative), Caprylyl Glycol (skin conditioner), Potassium Sorbate (preservative) and Hexylene Glycol (slip agent - helps other ingredients spread over the skin).
The Review: I was sampled the Med Peel Glycolic 50% Medium Strength Peel Kit for review from Skin-Peel.com and gave it a go the last night. Let me start this review by emphasizing that you really, really need to know what you are doing before applying chemical peels. If you have never had a chemical peel before, you should consider seeing a dermatologist or esthetician before trying this at home.
Estheticians don't give this advice because we want you to buy our products and services. We give this advice, because many of us got into the business of skin care in order to make people happy with their appearance (as well as the pure joy of squeezing a blackhead - yeah, it takes a certain type). If you damage your skin you're not going to be happy. Some things to know before your first peel are: what pH has to do with the skin, the Fitzpatrick's Classification Scale, and understanding what chemical peels do for your skin.
I went with the 50% Glycolic peel, because I'm quite familiar with chemical peels and have very tolerant skin. I've been using peels for quite some time to help to reduce fine lines and to combat pigmentation issues. I opened up my kit and was very pleased with the packaging and the size of the products. There is more than enough product to perform a series of peels. Generally speaking you may see some results with your first peel, but it usually takes a series of 3-6 peels to see true results. Also remember to give yourself proper down-time between peels and to stop after you've completed your series. I usually do my series of peels and then wait 4-6 months before performing another series (that is just my personal preference, you may want to wait longer).
My skin tolerated the 50% Glycolic quite well and I only experienced a mild burning sensation. Everyone's skin is different so you may feel more discomfort or none at all. A patch test before starting is always a wise idea. I left the peel on for a couple of minutes (basically until the tingling sensation had mostly subsided) and then I applied the neutralizing spray. You will notice a slight increase in tingling after neutralizing and that is normal. Afterward I rinsed my face with cool water and applied the Hyaluronic Replenish Serum, which is fabulous. Hyaluronic acid is great for hydrating the skin and keeping it supple. My skin is looking good and feeling nice and soft today. I have not noticed any actual peeling yet, but that is common with at home peels and doesn't always happen with peels given by an esthetician either.
The only things I would suggest if you're going to give this a try are: Start with a lower percentage and work your way up, speak with one of their consultants if you're not familiar with chemical peels (the instructions were a bit short on information) and purchase some cotton 2x2s (the cotton gauze that comes with the kit isn't really good for applying this peel).
Purchasing Information: This peel kit, along with a variety of others, can be purchased at http://www.skin-peel.com. They are also offering a 20% discount on all orders until December 31st, 2010 when you use the discount code "SHEBLOGS".

Review: Youthful Trends™ Makeup Primer & ThermaSkin Anti-Aging Soap™ - Thumbs Up
Well it's finally time for the review of these two products: The caffeine primer from Greensations and the ThermaSkin Facial Cleanser from Youthfultrends. I absolutely loved the makeup primer and the facial cleanser was pretty nice too.
If you'd like to give these a try enter the code "SHEBLOG" for a 25% discount at either of these sites.
The Claim:
Youthful Trends™ Makeup Primer is the world's first caffeinated primer with 100% natural ingredients. Makeup primers are all the rage these days, and they are used to help set your makeup and reduce the appearance of lines while absorbing oils and binding makeup to the skin. Unlike sticky primers and serums, this water based spray dries evenly while hydrating skin and tightening lines. Our spray also helps pores breathe and keeps makeup looking beautiful all day long. It also reduces facial sweating and protects skin from UV damage.
This proprietary formula outperforms all other makeup primers and one bottle lasts for many months. It's fantastic stuff works for all skin types and colors, as well as all types of makeup including mineral powders, creams and liquids. Supercharge your makeup regimen today for flawless beauty with the world's first caffeinated skin primer.
Ingredients: Purified Water (hydration), Caffeine (UV protection/tightening), Cucumber (hydration), Green Tea, Maitake Mushroom (hydration), Cats Claw (tightening), Sage (reduces sweating), Rosemary (antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory), Vegetable Glycerin (hydration), Witch Hazel (tightening), Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C), Alpha Lipoic Acid, Potassium Sorbate (preservative).
The Review: I love, love, love this stuff. It has a pleasant fresh smell (love the smell of cucumbers) and left my face feeling refreshed, moisturized and is not sticky at all. It also doesn't contain silicone, which can be irritating to some. I have been using Na-PCA to set my mineral makeup, but it doesn't compare to this at all. My face felt instantly moisturized and my makeup stayed in place all day. I also noticed that I did not have any itchiness at all when I used this to set my mineral makeup, which has happened with other products.
Now let's get to a break-down of some of the ingredients. It has been shown that caffeine can help with sunburned skin and the prevention of lesions on damaged skin, but I would still recommend using a sunscreen that protects again UVB and UVA rays. Cucumber, glycerin, and distilled water are all hydrating, but I'm not sold on the Maitaki mushroom just yet. I found lots of articles supporting it's medicinal values, but they were all for the ingestion of Maitaki, not the topical application. Alpha lipoic acid is used as an antioxidant, as well as green tea. Witch Hazel and caffeine are great toners, but I'm also not sold on Cat's Claw for tightening the skin. It does have anti-inflammatory and healing value so it's still a good ingredient for keeping your skin looking fresh.
Overall I love this product and the fact that it contains no parabans or SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulfate), which are primarily used as preservatives when you want to keep it cheap. This 2oz bottle lasts a long time and leaves my skin feeling fresh and hydrated and keeps my makeup looking wonderful all day.
The Claim:
Youthful Trends™ ThermaSkin Anti-Aging Soap™ is like botox in a bottle. This all natural soap is not like any other soap or non-soap cleanser. It instantly unclogs pores, tightens skin, reduces lines and replenishes elasticity and color without chemicals that strip your skin. It’s perfect for removing makeup, dirt, pollutants and oils. Whether you have oily skin, dry skin or just skin that’s been damaged by time, ThermaSkin Facial Cleanser is the answer.
This formula also combats problem skin conditions including acne, eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. The self foaming container allows us to make a formula with no harmful foaming chemicals such as SLS or SLES. The anti-aging secret of this formula comes from combining tiny doses of natural capsaicin with exotic botanicals that literally fix your skin by increasing circulation and absorption. A tiny bit goes a long way, and our facial cleanser can be used anywhere on the body.
Unlike regular soap, our formula does not clog pores because we use a proprietary base of natural botanical extracts and astringents. ThermaSkin Facial cleanser also works better than non-soap cleansers without harmful chemicals. You will absolutely fall in love with this soap.
Ingredients: Castile Liquid Soap (unclogs pores/tightening), Clary Sage Water (antioxidant/antimicrobial), Cucumber Water (hydrating/cleansing), Green Tea (antioxidant), Jewelweed (unclogs pores), Cranesbill Root (astringent), Rosemary Oleoresin (antimicrobial/preservative), Thyme (unclogs pores), Oleoresin Capsicum (unclogs pores/tightening/reduces lines), Witch Hazel (tightening), Vegetable Glycerin (reduces lines)
The Review: Just before I received this sample I had an awful acne breakout on my left cheek and chin (hello stress related acne). I was a bit hesitant to use this product, because of course I don't listen to my own advice, and I am a "picker" when it comes to acne. I was afraid that because this product contains capsicum (pepper) it would burn my skin, but it did not hurt at all and within a couple of days my acne had cleared up. This product has a nice earthy smell, cleaned my skin without leaving it feeling dry and lasts a long time. As far as Botox in a bottle, that is a bit of a reach, seriously nothing works like Botox, other than Botox. I still have my 1 inchers across the forehead.
There are quite a few interesting ingredients in this cleanser and I'll touch on the biggies. I have not found a study that indicates that Castile soap will tighten your skin, but it is an excellent cleanser that will not irritate or dry your skin. Clary sage water can be used as an antioxidant and we all know that's important. Oleoresin Capsicum, which is the main ingredient in pepper spray has other topical uses. Now remember we're not spraying it into our eyes and the amount in this formula is small. It is used as a topical pain reliever and in this product it being used to unclog pores, reduce lines and tighten the skin. This is only me guessing, but I believe that it may have some temporary effect upon wrinkles and sagging skin, because it is an irritant. Irritants temporarily inflame the skin and inflammation gives the appearance of tighter skin.
Overall this product did help to relieve my acne. I'm not sure how well it will work on someone with chronic acne, but at this price point it's worth a try. I did like the way my skin felt after using it and it has a nice earthy smell. Do I look ten years younger after using it for almost a month? Well no, but I wasn't expecting to. Would I use it again? Yes, I plan on using this whenever I have my acne flare ups.

Review: Essential Masksheet, Collagen – Thumbs Up
Product Profile: Firms and hydrates. Formulated with Collagen an essential factor, which constitutes over 90% of the deeper dermal layer. This mask sheet promotes a firmer and more resilient skin.
Price: $2.99 (Walgreens)
Review: This mask worked wonderfully and I plan on trying some others. I loved the fact that it was pre-cut and you just simply lay the sheet over your face, relax, and wait for 15-20 minutes. After removing the sheet you can rub in the remaining product with no need to wash anything away (a definite plus).
My skin was hydrated and this hydration helped to plump my skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines. I definitely had some of those from my drinking debauchery the day before. I especially liked how it felt cool and soothing when I put the mask on.

Review: Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm – Thumbs Up
Product Profile: Chock full of ingredients to make your lips kissably soft and seductively sweet, Honey Trap moisturizes with Shea butter and olive oil, holds in moisture with honey and beeswax and tastes sweet like white chocolate and vanilla (because that's what's in it!).
Smooth on some of this heavenly sweet mixture and you'll bare a remarkable resemblance to a temptress used as bait in a trap (think James Bond); this balm will attract lots of honeys to you for kissing.
Price: $6.95 (Lush), may be more in stores.
Review: I discovered this lip balm many years ago when I was visiting Canada. At that time there were no Lush stores in the United States so I would always grab a couple on my semi-annual pilgrimage to Toronto.
Being a Western New York native I definitely know what it's like to have chapped and dry winter lips. This product is AMAZING at keeping your lips soft and moist. It contains natural ingredients and NO petroleum (petroleum is very bad for your lips and you should avoid any products for the lips that contains it).
Forget Katy Perry and her PETROLATUM filled Cherry ChapStick. I'll take Honey Trap any day.
Purchasing Information: This lip balm can be purchased through the Lush Web Site or at Lush Stores.
